The ancient Chinese divided the sun’s annual circular motion into 24 segments. Each segment was called a specific ‘Solar Term’.

立春 Start of Spring (February 4th)

It’s not the beginning of spring in most of China; only in the extreme south.

After everything turns green and becomes full of vigor, people clearly can notice that daytime becomes longer and the weather gets warmer.

立春节后，植物转绿，焕发勃勃生机。人们可以清楚地注意到白天的时间变得更长，天气也愈发温暖了。

雨水 Rain Water (February 19th)

There is an increase in rainfall from then on.

Rain Water signals the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, lively spring-like scenery starts blossoming: the river water defreezes, wild geese move from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.

雨水标志着降雨量的增多和气温的回升。雨水节气来临之际，盛春之景开始勃发：河水解冻，大雁北归，草木转绿。

惊蛰 Insects Awaken (March 6th)

Thunder begins and hibernating insects wake up.

As the third solar term in the lunar year, its name alludes to the fact that animals sleeping in winter are awakened by spring thunder and that the earth begins to come back to life. It is the key time for spring agricultural activities.

作为农历年中的第三个节气，惊蛰的名字暗指冬眠的动物在春雷中苏醒，大地开始恢复生机。此时是春季农业活动的关键时期。

春分 Spring Equinox (March 21st)

With an equal length of day and night.

After the equinox, the sun moves northwards, resulting in gradually longer daytime in the Northern Hemisphere and longer night in the Southern Hemisphere.

春分过后，太阳直射点向北移动，导致北半球白昼逐渐变长，南半球的夜越来越长。

清明 Clear and Bright (April 5th)

The weather becomes noticeably warmer.

Pure Brightness or Clear and Bright, one of the 24 Solar Terms on the Chinese lunar calendar, begins on April 5 every year. The day is also known as the traditional Tomb-sweeping Day in China. This is the only occasion that marks the dawn of a new solar term as well as a traditional festival.

清明是中国农历二十四节气之一，从每年的4月5日开始。这一天也是中国传统清明节。这是唯一一个既是新节气开始也是传统节日的日子。

谷雨 Grain Rain (April 20th)

The early crops show their shoots.

Grain Rain originates from the old saying, “Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains,” which shows that this period of rainfall is extremely important for the growth of crops. The Grain Rain signals the end of cold weather and a rapid rise in temperature.

谷雨这个节气的名称来源于俗语“雨生百谷”，由此可以看出，在这段时间内雨水对于庄稼的生长是非常重要的。谷雨的到来代表着寒冷天气的终结和温度的攀升。
